How to get visible and win media coverage for your pet business
With journalist and author,
Publicity for Pet Businesses is a consultancy service and community run by Rachel Spencer, a freelance journalist who specialises in writing about the pet industry.
I’ve been working as a journalist since 1999, starting on local papers in Cheshire, then two national newspapers before going freelance in 2006.
I’ve always loved telling stories about pets and in 2009 when I adopted my friend’s dog Daisy, my focus changed and I began writing more and more about the pet industry.
My articles appear in national newspapers, magazines and websites and range from hard hitting news stories about animals suffering to charity campaigns and trend reports on the rise of the furry social media influencers.
I have contacts at all the major publications and know how to find the right angle for a story – that’s the most important thing.
Editors get hundreds of pitches and press releases every day – it’s about rising above the froth and giving them a great story their readers will be interested in.
Media coverage will help you raise awareness of your business, win new customers, establish you as an expert in your field and increase sales.
My book will teach you exactly how to get publicity, and if you need further support, I offer 1-1 consultancy services and online courses are coming soon!

My book will teach you exactly how to get publicity, and if you need further support, I offer 1-1 consultancy services.
It’s a straight talking guide to on how to do your own marketing and PR and make yourself visible
The pet industry is booming. We LOVE treating our animals. Gone are the days when they slept in yards and ate scraps.
Pets sleep on luxury, memory foam beds (or in their owners), get pampered at the groomers, hang out with their friends on walks or at daycare and recent Mintel research showed 51 per cent of owners would rather cut back on spending on themselves to treat their pet.
A staggering 59 per cent of people in the UK own a pet and in 2018, spending on pet care, products and services reached £1.7 billion.
By 2023 it’s estimated to rise by 25 per cent to £2.1 million. Rest assured, whatever your business, people are willing to spend money with you and publicity can help them find you.
My book will help you work out what your ‘story’ is that makes you stand out among the competition, how to connect and build relationships with journalists, learn to pitch stories and write press releases and maintain media coverage.
Plus there’s advice on working with bloggers and influencers and how to find the right professional to handle your public relations when you come to really scale your business.

working with rachel
We were lucky enough to meet Rachel at an event in Barcelona where she was interviewing us about our work.
In contrast to a number of journalists we’ve worked with, she was genuinely interested, empathetic and not just looking for the back story.
Rachel understood the importance of what we’re doing and that choosing the right outlets to pitch to was paramount.
Her integrity and love of dogs is second to none which fuels her desire to support people like you and me to share their story in a safe and positive way.
I wish we’d met Rachel when we were starting out as she would have saved us a lot of painful learning experiences!
Since meeting Rachel I’ve been astounded by how she’s really helped heighten my business profile by raising awareness about the work I do.
She captured the essence of my work perfectly and was keen to get a full unbiased story. But that’s not all. Rachel gets to know the person behind the business and is a really friendly person to talk too.
Rachel is clearly very good at writing a compelling article, she always takes the readers journey into account and you feel drawn into the story.
Thanks to Rachel I was able to get my message out about anxious dogs and safety when it comes to off lead dogs. My story featured in an article in the Sunday Mirror and on her own blog.
Both were shared numerous amounts of times and I got such great positive feedback.
I spoke to Rachel as I run a business caring for pets while their owners get married and offer a chaperone service at weddings.
We had an initial phone conversation and discussed my business and background and put together an engaging story.
Rachel is very personable, extremely professional and knowledgeable about the pet industry.
After discussions with a couple of national newspapers, Rachel placed the feature in the Star on Sunday.
I loved the write up, and it was great publicity for my business.
